In regards to Downtown Development Status—TDL Group aka Tim Horton’s.
We are totally against this drive-through for several reasons, one of which is the loss of parking space for downtown shopping. It is imperative that we keep our local down-town merchants in business and it is difficult enough for these shop owners to compete with the larger stores such as Walmart and the Mall. If parking is reduced further, I’m afraid it will be so much easier to shop outside of New Liskeard.
Another major reason is the exhaust fumes that we will have to inhale while walking downtown or parking our vehicles (if there is a spot available). In this day and age when Health Canada promotes healthy living via walking and exercise, why would we need a drive-through? For those of us who want to walk and window shop or walk along the boardwalk and go to Marco’s for ice cream with our children and grandchildren, this drive-through would mean that we have to endure the exhaust fumes and resulting smog. We would not dream of sitting by the picnic tables outside at Marco’s and smell those horrible fumes while trying to enjoy our ice cream or hamburger. Should one business suffer over another when the other already has a drive-through in Dymond Twp and a sit-down restaurant down-town?
How will this drive-through affect our major celebrations like Summerfest, Biker’s Re-union and Fall Fair when we need more parking spaces, not less? How will our tourists re-act when they are expecting clean, fresh air? Are we not proud of our Northern Clean Environment?
Years ago, I (Karin) lived in New Liskeard and had to walk to my place of employment passed the Post Office. I tried to hold my breath while walking past the idling vehicles in the winter. It is very uncomfortable and nasty to smell these exhaust fumes from the numerous vehicles. Do we really want this in our beautiful and scenic town.
Another important issue is the cost of this project to the city. Will the cost outweigh the rent collected? How can the City of Temiskaming Shores agree to this project without having a firm handle on the projected cost?
